“Oh, Jessica!” A woman with big blond hair and a tight-fitting dress wove through the crowd to greet them, and before Dylan could ask Jessica who this was, he found himself enveloped in a warm, soft, tight hug that went on a little longer than he might call appropriate.

Beside him, he heard Jessica snort into her wineglass. He glanced at her sidelong. Easy for her to think this was funny.

Untangling himself, he pulled back from the woman. “I’m sorry. Do we know each other?”

“Any friend of Robbie’s is family.” The woman beamed. “My, you certainly are handsome, aren’t you?”

Another laugh from Jessica, barely disguised this time.

The woman, however, seemed undeterred. “Candace Conway, fondly known as Candy. I’m Britt’s stepmother!”

“Ah, yes, I was war—” He stopped himself just in time. “The guys told me all about you last night.”

Candy’s eyes widened. “All good things I hope?”

“All good,” Dylan promised. “I hear you’re quite the matchmaker!”

Candy giggled, but it was clear she was flattered. “Now, I won’t take too much credit, but I have been known to be quite useful when it comes to helping my stepdaughters and nieces find love in this small town.”

“Then I know who I’ll ask when I’m in the market,” Dylan replied, only to hear Jessica sputter on her wine and fix him with a hard stare.

Candy looked appropriately affronted, and Dylan cleared his throat, thinking quickly. “If my lovely girlfriend ever gets tired of me, that is.”

He slid a hand around her waist and pulled her close. Every nerve ending seemed to react to the feel of her body again.

She swatted him on the chest, outwardly playful but intentionally hard if the blaze in her eyes said anything. “Tired of you? Or tired of waiting for that ring?” She grinned wickedly and Dylan tugged at his tie.

“Oh, you two!” Candy gave a loud laugh, clearly relieved. “Just the cutest couple. Well, don’t forget to kiss every time I tap a spoon against the glass at the reception tomorrow.”

Under his palm, Dylan felt Jessica stiffen. “I thought that only the bride and groom kissed for that.”

“Not at a Conway wedding!” Candy trilled and walked away, still laughing.

Jessica pulled away from his grip and pointed a scolding finger at him. “Don’t get any ideas.”

Could she see the laughter in his eyes? The room was dim, mostly lit by candles, but she knew him. Just not well enough to have given up on him a long time ago, like she probably should have done.

But she glanced away, looking around the rest of the room, which was full and loud now, making it difficult to hear the music over the conversation. Their silence felt out of place, and obvious, more to him than perhaps anyone else. And he didn’t care what anyone thought at that moment. Not even Robbie. He only cared about the woman beside him.
